The original Temple Run game, released for the iPhone in 2011 and for Android last year, has been downloaded more than 170 million times. The sequel, released last night has already topped the iTunes chart.
Like its predecessor, Temple Run 2 is an 'endless runner' - a game in which your character sprints forward constantly and the player's job is to make sure he turns corners, jumps obstacles and avoids bridges.
The new title expands on the principle by adding zip lines, mine carts and more varied scenery.
The game, developed by husband and wife team Keith Shepherd and Natalia Luckyanova, is free but players can buy coins or gems to upgrade your character and add special abilities.
The couple became millionaires following the success of Temple Run, which they put together in just four months. After that came Temple Run: Brave, a tie-in with Disney that featured Merida, the main character from the film Brave.
"The success has been phenomenal," says Shepherd. "When you're developing games you always hope that there will be a hit and people will love them. But this has become a hit on a level beyond what we ever imagined. Everybody is playing it."
The company says that Temple Run has 10 million players everyday. The sequel is already the top free iPhone app on iTunes, while the iPad version is second.
