Hackers claiming to be from the active group Anonymous hacked the website of the U.S. government response to the death of Aaron Swartz.
Activists embedded vision statement on the home page of the United States Sentencing Commission, an agency of the U.S. government.
The statement referred to the death of Mr. Swartz, similar internet activist killed himself in January.
"Two weeks ago today, crossing the line," the statement said.
"Two weeks ago today, killed Aaron Swartz. Killed as it is impossible choice. Killed because he was forced to play a game he could not win."
Mr. Swartz, who was 26, was facing charges of hacking and is believed to have taken his own life.
A federal trial was to be held next month. If found guilty, he could be facing up to 35 years in prison.
After his death, Mr. Swartz family released a statement blaming "intimidation" and "prosecution overreach" of the criminal justice system.
Operation last resort '
The attack on the website scheduled to begin at midnight eastern standard time, according to documents that appear to be online activists Anonymous.
Later on Saturday, the website was not operating.

The hackers were labeled the attack "Operation Last Resort", said that the site chosen for symbolic reasons.
"The federal sentencing guidelines ... the ability of prosecutors to cheat the citizens of their constitutionally-guaranteed right to a fair trial by a jury of their peers [and] there is a clear violation of the protection of amendment 8 penalties against cruel and unusual," the vision statement that.
The statement also revealed hackers had sensitive information relating to the number of judges of U.S. may be available to the public.
There were several attacks by hackers operating under the Anonymous banner in recent months.
On Thursday jailed two British men had taken part in attacks on payment services including PayPal, organized by Anonymous.
UK Government websites and other countries as well as the subject of attacks.
